Movies are always made better by good music, and sometimes the soundtracks are better than the movie. Like The Bodyguard, for instance. You probably don’t remember Kevin Costner’s character’s name, but you darn well know Whitney Houston’s timeless cover of “I Will Always Love You.” And sure, some soundtracks have chart-topping singles, but others establish more of a mood with memorable, emotive scores like Air’s The Virgin Suicides or the scores of celebrated composers like Hildur Guðnadóttir and Jon Brion. And don’t forget the soundtracks that ooze with nostalgia as relics of bygone musical eras such as Romeo + Juliet (1996), The Graduate (1968), and Saturday Night Fever (1977) to name a few. Pop some popcorn and spin these gems to the movies in your mind.
